How to Identify a Song by Humming the Tune
Music is a way of life. The effect it has on the human soul is immense, music serves as a getaway for some people from stress, hopelessness and even from depression. There are times we just can’t remember the actual lyrics to a song and all we are left is hum to the tune in our head. In this case, how does one remember or identify a song by humming to the tune?
Some years ago, maybe this would not be possible but thanks to technology there are voice processing software and applications that make this easy. In this post, we will give to you three web applications you can use to identify a song by humming to whatever tune you have in your head.
Web Applications to Identify a Song by Humming
Midomi
Midomi is a lightweight yet powerful music voice-search engine. It’s a community where music lovers gather and intending members can always register to add to the collection of songs on the website’s database which is constantly increasing daily.
When you open Midomi, the song identifier box is at the top. All you need to identify a song by humming is to click in the box and make your hum to the tune, this must be at least 10secs. When you are done humming, you click the search box again so Midomi can search and analyse your tune. There is also an advanced search engine on the site where you can identify your song by singing in any language or genre. You can also do a basic type-to-text search if that suits you.
Musipedia prides itself as the music version of Wikipedia. The website is easy to use and there are different options you can use to search for music or identify a song by humming to the tune. With Musipedia, you can search in many ways:
identify a melody by entering it with a Flash-based piano
by entering it in a JavaScript-based piano
by dragging piano keys on the site with your mouse
or by whistling the tune to your computer via a microphone
There are other advanced searches you can use such as: contour-based search, rhythm-based search and SOAP interface search.
Shazam
Shazam works differently from the other two websites listed above. Shazam is an app and it will only identify a song for you if you play a part of it, humming alone does not work for Shazam. The app is available on both Android and iOS with free and premium subscription.
Over the years, Shazam has become the go-to app for people who want to identify a song.
Other Workarounds and Tricks to Identify a Song
If you have an Android or iPhone, you don’t even need to download any app to identify the song you like. On Android, use your Google Assistant AI, play a song and ask the AI to identify it for you.
For iOS users, make sure you’ve set up your “Hey Siri”, summon Siri and it will identify any song playing for you. This does not work for you just humming to tunes.
