Alex Usifo Early & Education
The renowned Nigerian movie actor and entrepreneur Alex Usifo was born in the ’50s to the family of Mr. Barnabas and Mrs. Patricia Anobi Usifo in Lagos.
Born on April 16th 1953, Alex’ s dad worked with Central Bank at the time. Usifo had his elementary and secondary education at Ibadan and St. Bosco’s Grammar School, Ubiaja, Edo State respectively.
After his secondary education, Alex started hawking fried fish and fruits to complement his parents’ meager earnings.
Later, he became independent, working with NTA Benin after five years. Then, he applied and gained admission in St. Peter and Paul Major Seminary, Bodiji, Ibadan in 1978.
Not long after, he left the seminary school to get a Diploma Degree in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos amid financial difficulties.
Alex Usifo Career
In 1984, Alex Usifo’s acting career kicked off with his playing a role in the movie ‘The Return of the Native’ by Jimmy Atteh which was produced by Ray Yusuf. He went on from there to play lead roles in the movies, ‘Natas’ and ‘Two People’ which was produced by Baba Babs Fashina, going to NTA station in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria to take part in the weekly television series ‘At Your Service’. Before Nollywood, Alex Usifo had participated in stage plays like ‘Awero’ which was written, produced and directed by Larry Williams and Ola Rotimi’s ‘Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again!’ Which went on to be staged at the National Theatre, Iganmu.
His rise to fame came in 1988 when he starred in Zeb Ejoro’s TV program, ‘Ripples’ playing the character of Talaab Abass who was the villian in the movie and which is the name that most people know him as. He went on from Ripples to star in Reemmy Jes’ Dirty Game and then ‘Beyond Our Dreams’ where he played the part of Chief Odiete. After ‘Beyond our dreams’, people alternated between calling him Talab Abass and Chief Odiete.
Alex Usifo started a Modelling Agency in partnership with Nollywood Director, Andy Amneechi but later went solo as Silver and Gold Productions eventually evolving into the home for models and beauty queens like Sandra Petgrave and Toyin Raji to name a few. He also took jobs behind the screen, producing and directing.
The towering, baritoned actor whoose signature look is a clean shaven head which is his attempt at standing out as an artiste, is a member of Actors’ Guild of Nigeria, Directors’ Guild of Nigeria and Association of Movie Producers took part in various NTA productions; ‘Echoes of Life’, ‘Turning Wheel’, ‘Super Story’, ‘This is Life’ and has starred in over 250 Nollywood movies which include ‘Okoro the Prince’, ‘Strong Men at Work’, ‘Trumpet of Death’, ‘Who Am I, Final Point’, ‘The Guilty’, ‘Azima, Silent Night’, ‘Desperadoes’, ‘My Love’, ‘Classical Fraud’ and ‘Dangerous Sisters’.
He took a break from acting, taking a teaching job in the Department of History and International Studies in Babcock University.
He went for a Master’s degree in English at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), after gaining a degree in English at Ambrose-Ali University graduating with a 2nd-Class upper degree and then Babcock University, Illishan – Remo in Ogun state where he bagged a PhD in Philosophy emerging as the President of the 2016 Post- graduate Class in the University.
