Ahead of the forthcoming general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in Taraba State, has confirmed delivery of 3, 597 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).
The State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Umar Mukhtar Gajira, stated this yesterday, in Jalingo, during an Inter Agency Consultative Committee on election security meeting.
Also, the commission said it has received 200,332 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to be distributed in the state.
To bring voting points closer to the eligible voters, 1,685 polling units have also been created in the state, this became necessary due to the expansion of voters’ access to polling units from 1,912 to 3,597.
He noted that the commission has as well put in place security architecture that is best situated for the state in order to prevent possible breakdown of law and order before, during and after the elections.
Adding that, “we are equally establishing collaborative partnership for incident management by all security agencies.”
While emphasising that the role of the Inter Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) is to give the public the expected confidence to come out to exercise their franchise without fear of insecurity, the ICCCES, as disclosed by him “is a meeting of all the security agencies in the state.”
While drumming the readiness of the commission to provide a level playing ground for all the registered political parties, he believed that for elections to be credible, free, fair and generally accepted, “there must be sufficient guarantee to members of the public of their security and provision of the desired protection.”
