Apple Announces iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max with 48MP Camera and an Always-On Display

Apple on Wednesday announced the iPhone 14 Pro and the Pro Max at its “Far Out” event in what the company describes as the “most advanced Pro lineup ever.” The new iPhones come with a redesigned screen and a new intuitive “Dynamic Island” cutout. The iPhone 14 Pro phones feature an Always-On display and an upgraded 48MP main camera.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have a “surgical-grade” stainless steel design, according to Apple, and a texture matte finish that comes in four colours – deep purple, silver, gold, and space black. The phones feature a Super Retina XDR display with an Always-On enabled by a new 1Hz refresh rate and “multiple power-efficient technologies.” Apple says its latest Pro iPhones are twice as bright as last year’s iPhone 13 Pro, with peak brightness now up to 2000 nits.

The pill-shaped cutout at the top of the screen of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max introduces Dynamic Island. Apple says, “Dynamic Island enables new ways to interact with iPhone, featuring a design that blends the line between hardware and software, adapting in real time to show important alerts, notifications, and activities.”

In the camera department, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max feature a 48MP main camera for the first time ever in any iPhone. The camera has a quad-pixel sensor and a second-generation sensor-shit optical image stabilization. Thanks to the sensor, the latest Pro iPhones can shoot ProRAW photos at 48MP. The two other cameras at the back are the upgraded 12MP ultra-wide camera with 1.4 µm pixels and a telephoto lens that delivers 3x optical zoom. The TrueDepth selfie camera housed in the Dynamic Island cutout now has an f/1.9 aperture for better performance in low-light environments. The cinematic introduced by Apple on the iPhone 13 Pro now shoots 4k at 30fps and 4k at 24fps on the iPhone 14 Pro.

Other features of the phones are crash detection that triggers an emergency SOS and a new Emergency mode that works with a satellite even when there is no cellular or wi-fi coverage. The new iPhones are powered by the A16 Bionic chip, “the fastest in any smartphone,” according to Apple. Battery life is now all-day, thanks to the powerful chipset.

Pricing for the iPhone 14 Pro starts at $999 and $1099 for iPhone 14 Pro Max. Pre-orders begin on September 9th, and the phones will be available from September 16th.
