John Olukayode Fayemi was born on February 9th, 1965 to Chief Francis Falade Fayemi of Isan-Ekiti in Oye Local Government of Ekiti State, Nigeria. His late father was a retired Ondo state Civil Servant in 1977 having served in the Western Region, Western State and Ondo State respectively for over twenty-five years. In retirement, he later served as Councilor and Chairman of the old Ekiti North Local Government between 1977 and 1979, and subsequently, President, Customary Court covering parts of the Oye Division of old Ekiti North Local government

Kayode Fayemi Early Life

Fayemi was born in Ibadan, Oyo State, but grew up in Ado Ekiti. The last child in a family of six, he attended Christ’s School, Ado Ekiti and received degrees in History, Politics and International Relations from the Universities of Lagos and Ife in Nigeria and his Doctorate in War Studies from the prestigious King’s College, University of London, England, specializing in civil-military relations.

Fayemi has varied working experiences across the globe. He lectured in the Nigeria Police Training College, Sokoto. He has also lectured in Africa, Europe, the Americas and Asia. He also served as an Adviser on transitional justice, regional integration, constitutionalism, security sector reform and civil-military relations issues to various governments, inter-governmental institutions and development agencies. He was the Main Technical Adviser to Nigeria’s Human Rights Violations Investigation Commission (Oputa Panel). He served as Director of Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited and represented the South west Geo-political zone on the board of NDPHC. He was the Secretary General, Media Empowerment for Africa (The Radio Foundation) 1995–1997. 
Fayemi is a writer, he has written extensively on governance and democratization, civil-military relations and security sector issues in Africa. He was once a journalist with The Guardian Newspaper and City Tempo in UK.

Fayemi ran for the Ekiti state governorship election in the 2007 elections on the platform of the action congress party and won. He was sworn in as Governor of Ekiti state on October 16th, 2010 and completed his tenure on October 15th, 2014. He was also the first governor in Nigeria to sign into law the Freedom of Information Act on Monday, July 4th, 2011. Fayemi is currently the Minister of Solid Minerals Development.
