While everyone is waiting for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro to drop this fall, Google today announced the affordable Pixel 5A 5G. Google confirmed the arrival of the Pixel 5A 5G earlier in the year and it replaces last year’s Pixel 4A 5G and brings improvements in display, battery and it is also IP67 certified for water resistance.
The Pixel 5A 5G will be available in a “Mostly Black” colour and it features a rounded soft matte finish that is identical to its predecessor. Its power button is coloured and with a ridged shape which makes it slightly different from the Pixel 4A 5G. The new Pixel 5A 5G is also bigger in size measuring 156.2mm x 73.2mm x 8.8mm in dimensions and weighing 15g more than the 4A 5G.
In terms of display, it has a bigger 6.34” 1080P OLED panel with a standard 60Hz refresh rate. The body is now metal which is a major upgrade over last year’s polycarbonate and the phone is IP67 rated for water resistance.
The phone retains an 8MP selfie camera which maintains the same f/2.0 aperture and an 83-degree field of view (FOV). At the back is a square bump that houses the 12MP main shooter (f/1.7 and 77° FOV) and a 16MP ultrawide lens (117° FOV and f/2.2).
Moving to the hardware, the phone maintains the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset which is paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The Pixel 5A 5G will ship with Android 11 and it is guaranteed to receive OS and security patch updates from Google. There is a rear fingerprint scanner, a 3.5mm audio jack and it is packaged with an 18W charging brick for its 4,680mAh battery.
For connectivity, it offers the sub-6Hz flavour and not the faster mmWave with limited coverage. There is Bluetooth 5.0, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, two standard stereo speakers for great audio and two microphones to suppress noise.
Google is selling the Pixel 5A 5G in the US directly from its store for $449, it is available for pre-order today and it will start shipping on August 26. Google is providing four colourful case options to complement its Mostly Black colour.
