Early Life and Education
Boyega was born on March 17, 1992, in the Camberwell district of London but grew up in Peckham. His parents, Samson Adegboyega, a Pentecostal minister, and Abigail Adegboyega, a caregiver, are both of Nigerian ancestry. He is the younger of two sisters.
On November 27, 2000, Boyega and his sister Grace were among the last people to see Damilola Taylor alive; a ten-year-old Nigerian schoolboy who was killed in London, in what became one of the United Kingdom’s most high-profile killings. Two brothers—who were 12 and 13 at the time of the killing—were convicted of manslaughter in 2006. They were friends, and the Boyegas helped watch him.
He attended Oliver Goldsmith Primary School, where he had his first movie role at the age of nine, and started his secondary studies in 2003 at Westminster City School, where he participated in a number of school plays. He studied for a National Diploma in Performing Arts at South Thames College’s Wandsworth campus from 2008 to 2010. He participated in the college’s production of Othello, where he played the lead. He enrolled at the University of Greenwich to pursue a BA in media writing and film studies but left to concentrate on his acting career. When the Los Angeles branch of the Identity School of Acting opened in 2018, he became a patron after completing his acting training there.
John Boyega Career
Boyega trained at the Identity School of Acting, Hackney, and had six appearances at the National Theatre and Tricycle Theatre before he was offered a role in the sci-fi comedy film ‘Attack the Block’ in 2011. He plays the role of Moses, a tough urban teen, who fights an alien invasion with his friends. This was the launch pad to his acting career. The same year he acted in the film ‘Junkhearts’, as a drug dealer in the criminal world of gun running. He was cast in the boxing drama ‘Da Brick’ based on the life of Mike Tyson, written by John Ridley. However, he suffered a setback as the film was dropped by HBO.
Boyega did not lose heart and his career progressed with a role in the film ‘My Murder’ in 2012. This was followed by an adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s historical fiction book about the Nigerian civil war, ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ in 2013 and ‘Imperial Dreams’ in 2014. His real breakthrough came with a lead role in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, where he plays Finn, a storm trooper, who leaves the force after witnessing brutalities committed by them on his first combat mission and then fights back for justice. The movie was a huge box office hit and his performance brought in favourable reviews.
Personal Life
The amazing British-Nigerian actor is still single and hoping to be in a committed relationship with the woman of his dreams. In a recent interview on SiriusXM’s Bevelations with the host Bevy Smith, he said he would like his potential partner to be “brown and thick.”
Furthermore, he revealed that he wouldn’t have thought of a relationship if he wasn’t approaching his 30th birthday. He said, “Well, we’ve got to be honest, you know, before I wouldn’t have said that at 27, 28. Now I’m like, “No, no, you’ve got to speak it into existence.” Brown and thick, melanin levels past 75 per cent, thick levels. You have to be looking good.
