How to Enable Dark Mode on WhatsApp for Android and iOS

Want to enable dark mode on WhatsApp for Android and iOS? The Facebook-owned platform has finally made the feature official after several months of testing. It was only a matter of time before the company included dark-mode after the feature came to Twitter, Instagram and YouTube a while ago.

Before it made the feature official, WhatsApp says it experimented and researched on two areas. “When choosing colours, we wanted to minimize eye fatigue and use colours that are closer to the system defaults on iPhone and Android respectively. We wanted to help users easily focus their attention on each screen. We did this by using colour and other design elements to make sure the most important information stands out,” says WhatsApp.

When dark mode is enabled on WhatsApp, it lowers the display brightness on the phone itself. Explaining how it works, a spokesperson said, “During testing we found that combining pure black and white creates high contrast that can lead to eye fatigue. So instead, you’ll notice a special dark gray background and off-white colour that lowers the brightness of the screen, cuts down the glare, and improves contrast and readability.”
