Farmer arraigned for stealing yams worth N80,000

A40-year-old man, Adetunji Sunday, was docked before an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court on Friday, for allegedly stealing yams worth N80,000.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Irewole Jimoh, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on November 29, 2022, around 4:00 p.m. at the Federal Government Girls College, Ipetumodu.

Mr Jimoh said that the defendant forcibly entered into the farmland of Olayinka Emmanuel to commit felony to wit: stealing.

He added that the defendant stole tubers of yams, valued at N80,000 and property of Olayinka Emmanuel.

According to him, the offence contravened sections: 81,383 and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to two-count charges of entering and stealing.

The Defence Counsel, Bukoye Fayomi, pleaded for the bail of the defendant in most liberal terms, promising that his client would not jump bail.

Magistrate O. T. Badmus granted the bail of the defendant in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like amount.

Mr Badmus said that the surety must swear to an affidavit of means, resides within the court’s jurisdiction, gainfully employed with good character, with evidence of three years tax clearance certificate.

He added that the surety must produce an identification card of gainfully employed and the address to be verified by the prosecutor.

The magistrate ordered the remand of the defendant in Ile-Ife Nigeria Correctional Custody pending the perfection of the bail condition.

The case was adjourned until January 1, 2023.
